Major Art Exhibitions in London June - August 2013

This is my monthly update about the major Art Exhibitions on show in London.

RA Summer Exhibition 2013
June - August typically covers the "Summer Showcase" exhibitions.  You can see these in London right now or they will open in the three month period between June and August 2013.

I'm also publishing today a new Page on this blog Major Art Exhibitions in London in 2013 - listed at the top - which is a listing of all exhibitions in the London in 2013.

    The exhibitions highlighted are:
    • major exhibitions in major art galleries and museums in LONDON - listed alphabetically.  Links to the websites of each of the venues can be found in the name
    • major art competition exhibitions - typically those which are listed in my page on Major UK Art Competitions in 2013
    • major art society exhibitions
Links to the venue's website are in the title
Links to visiting information can be found by clicking the address

Major Art Galleries and Museums in the UK

Great Russell Street, London, WC1B 3DG

    Courtauld Gallery

Somerset House, Strand, London WC2R 0RN

    Paul Gauguin 050

The Courtauld's permanent collection has some choice pieces so if visiting to see one of the above make sure you don't miss the paintings in the main galleries.

    Dulwich Picture Gallery

    Gallery Road, London, SE21 7AD
    • 12 June - 22 September 2013 - A Crisis of Brilliance Nash, Nevinson, Spencer, Gertler, Carrington, Bomberg: A Crisis of Brilliance, 1908-1922.  This summer exhibition in Dulwich with an emphasis on the first wave of BritArt!  It brings together for the first time some of the best and most innovative works by influential artists from the early part of the 20th century - namely best and most innovative works by Paul Nash, C.R.W. Nevinson, Stanley Spencer, Mark Gertler, Dora Carrington and David Bomberg.
A major exhibition to watch out for later in the year is Whistler in London

    National Gallery

    Trafalgar Square London WC2N 5DN

I tend to go to the National for the permanent collection rather than the temporary exhibitions. It's possible to spend hours looking at the truly stunning paintings in the main galleries. It takes me about half an hour to give friends and visitors to London the top speed whistle stop tour through the collection highlights!

    National Portrait Gallery

    St Martin’s Place, London WC2H 0HE
    Shortlisted portrait: 'The Uncertain Time'

    • 30 March until 1 November 2013 - Jacob Epstein: Portrait Sculptor (Room 33) Works on display include some of Epstein’s most celebrated portraits, notably his busts of Joseph Conrad, T.S Eliot, Vaughan Williams and George Bernard Shaw.
Don't ignore the permanent collection!  The Tudor Gallery and the twentieth century galleries are my favourites.

    Royal Academy of Arts

    Burlington House, Piccadilly, London W1J 0BD | 6 Burlington Gardens, London W1S 3ET

I'm really looking forward to the Australia exhibition 21 September—8 December 2013 in the Main Galleries, Burlington House

    Saatchi Gallery

    Duke of York's HQ, King's Road, London SW3 4RY

I'm not a fan of this gallery, mainly because I don't have a great affinity with this sort of contemporary art but also because I don't like what seems to me to be sleight of hand marketing.  There's also a curious mismatch between the way people describe visiting the gallery and the supposed number of gallery visitors.

Shirley Sherwood Gallery of Botanical Art

Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Richmond, Surrey TW9 3AB

    • 11 May - 22 September 2013 Rory McEwen, The Colours of Reality showcases his botanical work and includes works from artists who influenced him.  This is a "must see" for the botanical artists!
Very much a gallery for those who love botanical art and illustration

    Tate Britain

    Millbank, London SW1P 4RG

John Constable - Flatford Mill (‘Scene on a Navigable River’) 1816–17
Tate - part of the new BP Walk through British Art
    • Open every day BP Walk through British Art The brand NEW BP Walk through British Art offers a circuit of Tate Britain’s unparalleled collection from its beginnings to its end.  This new development has tackled the thoroughly confusing way in which Tate Britain used to display and hang 500 years of British Art. Current indications are that the change is for the good.  I'm waiting for new post-op glasses (so I can cope with the labels!) before I go so look out for a review next month.  Meanwhile here's Brian Sewell on the new hang.
    • Open every day Turner Collection Tate Britain houses the world’s largest collection of Turner’s work.
    • Until August 2013 Basic Design This display explores the role that Basic Design – a new and radical approach to training in art schools – played in revolutionising art.
    • 5 June – 1 September 2013 Gary Hume Part of the internationally celebrated group of ‘Young British Artists’ that studied at London’s Goldsmiths College in the late 1980s.
    • 5 June – 1 September 2013 Patrick Caulfield Tate Britain presents a survey exhibition of the celebrated British painter, Patrick Caulfield (1936–2005).
    • 26 June – 20 October 2013 Lowry and the Painting of Modern Life  This is going to be a blockbuster exhibition.
Tate Britain appears to be making a big effort to get back in tune with what people want out of a gallery which is supposed to represent the best in British Art.  Like recognising people want to see the assets which were stored in the vaults and finally getting round to giving Lowry a major exhibition.  However the debate about ethical sponsorship and the need to identify 'better sponsors' to replace that stamped all over the exhibitions by BP rumbles on.

    Tate Modern

    Bankside, London SE1 9TG

Tate Modern is looking very much to parts of the world which haven't traditionally featured in exhibitions of contemporary art in the past.  I'm thinking maybe they need to work on the balance a bit more.

    Wallace Collection

Hertford House, Manchester Square, London W1U 3BN Open daily from 10am - 5pm
The Wallace also has an interesting permanent collection which is well worth a visit.  They've got some very nice paintings by Canaletto.

    Art Society Exhibitions

I've also included exhibitions of note by member artists on related subjects and major art competitions at these galleries.

Also included are the events and workshops associated with the Art Society Exhibitions where these are posted on websites

    Bankside Gallery

    48 Hopton Street, London, SE1 9JH Open daily 11am - 6pm during exhibitions
    • 2 August - 8 September 2013 - Off the Wall - A joint summer exhibition by artists from the Royal Watercolour Society and Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers

    Mall Galleries

The Mall, London SW1Y 5BD All exhibitions are 10:00am to 17:00pm daily unless otherwise stated
The Mall Galleries are also holding a series of summer workshops between 12 - 22 August.
